Ok, now we know the drill with Uncle Donut. Delicately crafted donuts donned and lodged with dressings that need be taken in equal parts visually and digestively. Bakery or supermarket donuts these are not. These are top shelf.
This week the Boutique Geelong Donutery dropped its third menu in as many months. This is what it looks like.
1 Tiramisu- Single Origin Cartel Coffee Custard, Dark Chocolate, Cocoa
2 Peppermint Crisp- Mint Glaze, Top Deck, Crushed Peppermint Crisp
3 The old Picnic- Caramel Fudge, Puffed Rise, Milk Chocolate
4 Sticky Awkward Date- Sticky Date Mousse, French Buttercream, Walnuts
5 Upside Down Quince Tart- Poached quince, Almond Cream, Flame Torched
6 Passionfruit Pavlova- Passionfruit Curd, Pink Dehydrated Meringue, Strawberry Dust
This time instead of eating 6 donuts I thought I'd let my house mates get involved in the tasting.
Top: Upside Down Quince Tart, Tiramisu, Peppermint Crisp. Bottom: Passionfruit Pavlova, The Old Picnic, Sticky Awkward Date.
As soon as this one hit mouths people were throwing their hands up in the air as if they had just won a race. Cracker of a donut. Cartel coffee mousse is balanced perfectly with the choc top. I think there is a reason this is at number 1 on the menu.
According to the Geelong and Bellarine Peninsula grape vine this one is a crowd favourite. And we know why. Pig noises filled my kitchen as this one was consumed. One tester even remarked “mmmm tastes like Peppermint Crisp”. True to its name- nailed it.
The Old Picnic
Looks and tastes on point- I would say the slickest looking of the bunch. The rice puff, perhaps the subtlest of ingredient ensures ultimate textural pop.
Sticky Awkward Date
Prior learning has taught me that the crew at Uncle Donut can fill a donut. Sticky Awkward Date is no different. The mouse is deliciously smooth, sweet and creamy however could do with a couple more dates.? On a side note French buttercream should be bottled and sold!
Upside Down Quince Tart
QUINCE - say that 5 times without feeling strange. Has anyone under 80 ever eaten a quince? Amaretto boozers this ones for you.
Uncle Donut’s trademark tang. Tropical cousin of both Crazy in the Coconut and Lemon Meringue- no Uncle Donut menu is complete without flamboyant zest.
Ok that’s my opinion for all its worth (nothing), now go and form yours- 100 Little Malop St, Geelong.
Please note: In no way shape or form am I a food critic, I am just passionate about eating dessert.
